The World According to ZAH: 06-05-15

  • Kaitlyn JennerSo Bruce Jenner is now officially Caitlyn Jenner. From what I’ve read (and I could be totally wrong on this), she is technically a lesbian who currently has a penis. Am I correct on that? Listen…I’m all for being who you want to be and all, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t think this was being milked too much for publicity. I mean, I know she’s a celebrity and this is a big deal, but Cher’s daughter Chastity turned into Chaz and people barely blinked an eye. Bruce had cameras following him around as he was going through his transition and I’m sure Caitlyn’s now swamped with cameras and people throwing money her way. If it were any other celebrity family, I’d be standing back and applauding her for being so inspirational. But because it’s Jenner, I’m just wanting the spotlight to go somewhere else. Of course, having said that I think it’s safe to say that Caitlyn is probably the ONLY authentic member of that entire family…so there’s that to look up to.
  • Not two days after hearing news that Samoa Joe had signed a WWE contract, he ended up injuring Tyson Kidd in a match when delivering the muscle buster. I’ve seen the video and it just looks like a bad landing, is all. Nothing reckless…just “one of those bumps”. But still…that doesn’t look good on Joe coming fresh out of the gate as Kidd is rumoured to be out of action for “several months”.

  • UnfilteredI’ve watched four episodes of Renee Young’s WWE Network program, Unfiltered. I have to say a few things about this show. First, Young is incredibly beautiful and talented. She’s a great interviewer because she makes everything sound like a conversation. Second, the shows are too short. I mean, at least give me 20 minutes or something. Under 10 minutes per episode? I know the current generation have a short attention span, but damn. Third, she needs to drop the entertainment stuff. I know she’s doing it more for her own satisfaction than anything else, but the first episode with Seth Rollins and the fourth episode with Wade Barrett were far and above the other two. Why? Because she just sat down to eat with them and had normal conversations with them, NOT their characters. Both interviews were engaging and flirty and fun. I was already a big fan of Seth Rollins, but now I’m a massive fan because of that interview. Stick with that. It’s like “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with Jerry Seinfeld…only it’s “Sports Entertainers in Restaurants Eating Food” with Renee Young. Trust me on this.

  • Wooooo! NationI listened to the latest Woo Nation, which is Ric Flair’s #1-rated podcast (really?). He had Mick Foley as a guest and I gotta admit…I was mesmerized. Not only did I learn that there isn’t any real animosity between the two of them (I thought they hated each other), but they had some great stories from the past. I’ll definitely be giving Woo Nation a listen again, depending on the guest. With so many podcasts out there, it’s tough to narrow things down to who you relaly want to listen to. I listen to Sam Roberts’ Wrestling Podcast because he gets great guests and treats them like real people and comes across as a genuine fan (I like that). I listen to The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana because that’s the one that started it all. Plus, I love his conversations with people; it just comes from a point of view that you don’t hear from other places. I occasionally listen to podcasts from Steve Austin or Chris Jericho, but they seem way too over-produced for my tastes. Again, it just depends on the guest.
  • worlds-cutest-tag-teamIn terms of video podcasts or video journals, I’m all about the Candice & Joey Show featuring Candice LeRae and Joey Ryan. I love their behind-the-scenes “this is my actual life” videos. No storylines…no interviews…just them. That’s also why I really enjoy the Brian Myers (FKA Curt Hawkins) show Makin’ Towns. It’s just footage of his weekends, which gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of independent wrestling. MVP has a nice little show, too…but that’s either just him talking or him interviewing somebody. Still…it’s normally really interesting.

  • I don’t know about you, but the weekend movie selection seems to be lacking. A LOT. In fact, things have kind of slowed down (for me, at least) after Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mad Max: Fury Road came out. I know Pitch Perfect 2 did really well, but that’s not my demographic at all. I’m hoping for good things with Jurassic World’s release next weekend. Fingers crossed that the movie is as good as it looks.

  • Speaking of movies that “lack”, I had the unfortunate displeasure to watch the entire trailer for Joe Dirt 2 Not only can I not believe they made a sequel, but I can’t believe the premise of it all. Will Christopher Walkin do fucking ANYTHING these days??? He’s shitting all over his acting legacy with stuff like this and that silly singing & dancing Captain Hook he did on NBC.

  • On TNA Impact this past week, James Storm appeared to attempt murder on Mickie James. At the very least, it’s an assault charge as it happened way outside of the Impact studios and was all captured on security footage.

I mean, you want us to follow your more “edgy” product and “provocative” storylines, but somebody tries to kill or maim somebody else and doesn’t get fired from the promotion? And how did TNA get this footage, anyway? The whole thing is a huge reason why TNA is dead in the water. I don’t think ANYTHING can save the brand at this point. As I said when the transition to Destination America was announced, TNA needs a complete overhaul of their product, including (and especially) the name of their brand…because TNA has lost its luster. Nothing has changed.

  • I like that Lana and Dolph Ziggler have been continuing their “courtship” on social media. Gotta give ‘em props…they’re trying to make the relationship seem real. I guess they need to go in an entirely new direction with each other now that Rusev is out injured for the foreseeable future.

  • Tyler BreezeWith Sami Zayn and Hideo Itami out injured, Kevin Owens moving up to the main roster, and both Finn Bàlor & Samoa Joe not too far behind him…who is left to pick up the ball and run with it? My bet is on Tyler Breeze and Uhaa Nation. I think Breeze is very close to being called-up and Nation is going to make his mark on NXT in very short order. I just don’t think guys like Barin Corbin, Solomon Crowe, or Tye Dillinger have what it takes at this point. It’ll be interesting to see what NXT does over the next few months. Do they have enough talent to make people mark out the way they do now? Perhaps…only time will tell.
  • Lucha UndergroundHere’s a question: is anybody watching Lucha Underground? Last I heard, they hadn’t officially announced Season Two yet and even if they did, was anybody listening? Some of their matches are fun and the set-up/premise is unique…I just don’t know if this is the type of product that people want to watch en masse.
  • Song of the Week this week comes from Timmy Trumpet, a dance act that I’ve never even heard of prior to this song. But there’s something about this that kicks my ass whenever I’m working out. LOVE this: Freaks.
