The World According to ZAH: 07-03-15

  • Jay LethalAs much as I was disappointed to see it happen, huge props and congratulations go out to the new Ring of Honor champion Jay Lethal. He has been in this business for a VERY long time and has earned his championship opportunity. I’m a huge Jay Briscoe fan, so I was sad to see Lethal end his reign. I never really thought Lethal had what it took to be the face of the company. I guess we’ll see what happens over the coming months. For my money, I’m all about Adam Cole or Jay Briscoe as the only other viable championship possibilities in ROH. There are a lot of guys who could run with the ball if given a surprise opportunity, but right now none of them stand out as “the man”. The next few months should be VERY interesting.
  • Tough Enough castTwo episodes in and I’m already a fan of Tough Enough. I love the “Big Brother meets WWE” concept and think that it’s firing on all cylinders right now. Not everybody may love the concept, but I think it’s original and something they can build upon. I love the judges only choosing people based upon what they see on the television program. I love that the fans get to vote for the bottom three. I love the “judges save” concept. It’s just a lot of fun to watch. Right now, I’d have to say Patrick and Tanner are my two picks for male superstar, while Diana is my pick for female superstar (which kinda sucks because I don’t like her at all).
  • I don’t know about you, but I find Will Farrell movies to be hit and miss. For every incredible Anchorman or Step Brothers, there is a Land of the Lost or Everything Must Go. I’m still up in the air about his new movie, Daddy’s Home. For me, the only really funny spot is the basketball-to-the-face segment at the end of the trailer that involves TNA Knockout Taryn Terrell.

  • Doink the Clown - Matt BorneYet another bullshit lawsuit has been thrown at WWE’s way by a wrestler’s family. To the best of my knowledge, they’re all being filed by the same lawyer, who is convincing the families that they can get money by suing WWE (similar to how former NFL players successfully sued the organization for their knowledge of concussion-related issues). The problem is that the latest one, filed by the mother of two of Matt “Doink the Clown” Borne‘s children, concedes that Borne actually received treatment for his drug addiction by the WWE’s Wellness Policy. In this case, though, the blame for Borne’s drug addiction is due to his issues with concussions. How in the blue hell does she know that?? The suit then goes on to list “dozens of examples” of WWE superstars who have died young over the years such as including the Ultimate Warrior (54 from heart attack), “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig (44 from acute cocaine intoxication), “Crush” Brian Adams (43 from a legal “drug cocktail”), Bam Bam Bigelow (45 from overdose of cocaine & anti-anxiety medication), Eddie Guerrero (38 from acute heart failure), Randy “Macho Man” Savage (58 from heart attack), “Big Boss Man” Ray Traylor (41 from heart attack), Yokozuna (34 from pulmonary edema due to massive weight), & Chris Benoit (40 from suicide). I feel bad because her kids lost their father, but fuck this bitch and her shit-ass lawyer who thinks this is an actual case because they’re only out for a quick buck.
  • I caught Inside Out this week with the family. My wife and two stepdaughters LOVED the movie. Hell…I had to pass over a couple of Kleenex just to help them with their crying near the end of the movie. For me, though, this wasn’t the best Pixar/Disney movie. I mean, it was a brilliant concept and was beautifully made…but I just didn’t find myself enjoying it very much. I never really found the funny parts funny. Give me Finding Nemo or Toy Story or even Tangled and I can find the humour. I actually thought this was more of a drama than anything else, and just wasn’t my kind of movie. But the kids loved it, so I guess it doesn’t matter what I think. Like Frozen, I just don’t see what all the fuss is about with this one.

  • I’m still a fan of the cartoon genre, though. One of my most anticipated movies of the year opens up this weekend: Minions. I don’t think I’ve seen a trailer yet where I didn’t snicker or laugh at least once. This looks fantastic!

  • Finn Balor 2I don’t know about you, but I’m very intrigued by tomorrow morning’s WWE live event from Japan. I don’t see a lot of storyline advancement or huge upsets taking place, but it will be interesting to see how much they push Finn Bàlor as THE MAN in NXT. I fully expect him to win the NXT title from Kevin Owens…I mean, they’ve been promoting and pushing the hell out of him on the network for the past couple of weeks. Why do that only to kill his momentum with a loss or DQ/count-out win? Plus, it opens Owens up to winning the U.S. title at Backlash while helping NXT move into a new direction with a potential WrestleMania main event player as their champion.
  • Stay Hyped 1As NXT continues to be the launchpad for future main roster superstars, you gotta wonder if there are other people on WWE’s radar who they are thinking about moving back to NXT. I mean, they had different results up until now. Guys like Brodus Clay and Mason Ryan were miserable failures, but Tyson Kidd reinvigorated his career. With Zack Ryder currently in a goofy tag team with that Mojo Rawley guy, you gotta wonder if there is anybody else on the main roster who we’ll see in NXT soon so that performers like Finn Balor, Tyler Breeze, Enzo Amoré, Charlotte, and Sasha Banks can make their way up the ladder?
  • Global Force WrestlingThis whole Global Force vs TNA storyline is already boring me and it hasn’t really started yet. The lines are becoming blurred as Bobby Roode has been announced as debuting at GFW’s debut television tapings in Las Vegas. He’s still on the TNA roster, though Low Ki and Magnus and James Storm and Austin Aries are not…but they could be part of some kind of “invasion” angle. Ugh. I appreciate the fact that they want to try something new, but how does this help anybody? It helps Jeff Jarrett and Global Force because TNA still has infinitely more viewers and fans than Global Force does right now. It helps TNA because there’s a chance that older fans might give them one more chance with this “new” storyline. I just want to know who is signed to what company and where they go from here.
  • Sasha BanksCan I just say that I’ve been falling in love with Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch down in NXT? If I had the chance to do my “25 All-Time Hottest Female Wrestlers” over again, I would probably include both of them. I probably would have placed Nikki Bella a LOT higher on the list, too…but where she’s just so inherently unlikeable, I couldn’t justify it. Still…I’m a Bank$ fan. I cannot wait to see her on the main roster.
  • Song of the Week is relevant to the nonsense going on between the current and former members of Van Halen right now. Eddie Van Halen can’t help but rip Michael Anthony, then Sammy Hagar can’t help but record a video of himself calling Eddie a “fucking liar”, all the while David Lee Roth is going around from television show to television show singing off key and proving that he’s truly washed up. I don’t care what anybody says…I’m a Van Hagar fan. I enjoy the Van Halen music, don’t get me wrong…but if I had to pick one band out of the two, it would be the one with Hagar at the helm.
